If there's a touch attack (melee or ranged) involved you should be able to use defensive fighting on that, and a magus should be able to use fighting defensively with any spell combat. If it's quickened or otherwise a swift action to cast, that should be compatible with total defense regardless of whether it requires an attack roll. Senko.

AC goes from 24 (with a flat 20 AC) to 35 when fighting defensively, and 39 AC when fighting defensively as a full attack action. If we put on mithral full plate (a bit more expensive, and with 10ft less movement) it goes up to 38/42 AC, but since 35 is comfortably 'blue' (in the bench-pressing spreadsheet), I don't think it's a problem.
