John deere 4020 problems

Member. Apr 26, 2011. #1. I am having two problems with my 1971 4320 with 7500 original hours. The first is that there is a rattling noise that starts shortly after the engine is started and it never quits. I have had this tractor for 4 years and it hasn"t gotton any worse or better. It sounds like it is coming from the front pump area.

You can open that panel by the removal of the 3/8 cap screw at the bottom and all of your switch wiring is in there. I have had these wires to come loose.It's also why Deere special ordered those pumps with an easily adjustable advance screw. 4020 is supposed to get a timing advance up around 16 engines degrees. That is a lot, and if it's not happening it can make a big difference in performance. 4020 is supposed to advance 2 engine degrees by 1000 engine RPM. Directly behind the oil pressure gauge is a small hole in the governor housing. Oil will go through that hole and run down a trough to the oil tube. Remove the oil pressure gauge and take a small stiff piece of wire and you can unclog the hole. I had the same issue with a 37 A. It takes some. patience but it can be done. Now the brakes are totally locked up. The tractor won't move. I mentioned couple weeks ago picking up a 4020 w/powershift at local auction. It was 1 owner but we knew the maint was very poor... Changing all fluids and filters --expecting to see some gremlins pop up. Our issue now is the powershift going forward works great. Reverse, not so much.

Suggest you clean the suction screen, replace the filter and change the hydraulic oil. Idle the tractor for a few minutes and check the hydraulic operations.
